This presentation allows the participants to determine if they are under an unusual amount of distress and what specific techniques they can use to cope with those stressors including progressive relaxation and mental imagery. The presentation also focuses on what can be done about their stressors while they write a personal plan of action.

THE CARE-FRONTATION SKILL - What to do when you are very concerned about someone close to you.

This presentation addresses a specific life skill that a person can use to confront someone who they are very concerned about in a caring, concerned and non-judgmental way. A practice session for the participants is included in this presentation.



#7 Topic:
SUICIDE IS A PERMANENT SOLUTION to a TEMPORARY PROBLEM!

This presentation initially focuses on the sad facts/statistics regarding teen suicide. It also addresses the sign/symptoms of teen suicide. In addition, Tom addresses how one can respond in a caring, non-judgmental way to confront someone who may be severely depressed.

HOW WELL ARE YOU?--Looking at your total wellness and beginning to live more “well”.

This presentation addresses the difference between achieving total wellness vs being physically healthy. A personal responsibility is discussed within the 7 dimensions of wellness. Reducing risk factors is also addressed that would dramatically improves ones “quality” of life.

WHAT’S IMPORTANT IN YOUR LIFE? - Managing your time and setting priorities in your life.....!

This presentation addresses time management in your life. It also addresses efficient ways of managing the time you have personally, professionally and family-wise. A look at the participant’s “normal day” is one activity on the program. A closer look at “workaholism” and “quality” time is also included. Don’t bring your watches!

CHOOSING TO BE MORE WELL----A personal responsibility!

This presentation addresses total wellness vs. just your physical health and discusses specific personal responsibilities one needs to take socially, physically, emotionally and mentally. The assessment of ones wellness can be turned into a workshop day including stress management, time management, personal wellness and personal wellness/self-care planning.

AN ELEPHANT IN THE LIVING ROOM --Living in a family of alcoholism....!

This presentation addressees how alcoholism in a family affects the entire family. A discussion of family roles, enabling and co-dependency also takes place. Practical strategies on what family members need to do to get help for themselves is addressed! Knowing how children of alcoholics function allows us to teach and parent more effectively!

This presentation addresses the consequences of the use/non-use of alcohol and focuses on how big of a decision it actually is and how it will impact their entire life. True life stories are shared that will make students personally think about their impending decision and it’s many consequences.

DYING TO BE THIN--Disordered eating; it’s not about food!

TARGET AUDIENCE: M.S. / H.S. / Parents
LENGTH: 1-1.5 Hrs.

This session addresses two syndromes of disordered eating--anorexia nervosa and bulimia. It focuses on how teens get trapped in this life-threatening web of mind-games and eating. Signs/symptoms and reasons teens develop these disorders will be addressed. Also, some do’s and don’ts about dealing with someone who may have a disorder and how to more effectively confront them will all be discussed.

This presentation will address choices teens are quite often faced with, the risks involved and the many consequences that could occur. This power point presentation addresses the “health” of one’s heart “character-wise”. It discusses the four chambers of the heart that need to be “exercised” to ensure the needed character to succeed in life and be a leader. Several relevant true life stories are shared with some video clips that make this session a very emotional and thought-provoking one!

This session can range from 1 - 7 hours depending on the specificity of the peer empowerment skills covered. This presentation addresses the 7 habits of Highly Effective Teens developed by Steven Covey. Practical strategies and examples of how to live by those habits and to become a more effective teen leader are also discussed.

CONTRACTING for ACCOUNTABILITY

This session focuses on the impending major decisions that adolescents will be forced to make that could alter their LIFE! After a discussion of facts and statistics the teens will be asked to formulate their decisions and to develop their own life contracts. The accountability factor can “raise the stakes” for those decisions to take place. Several discussions will occur for participants to truly think about their contract they’d like to make for their life. Parents, friends and personal supporters in their lives are then asked to co-sign this contract and aid them in their endeavor!

This presentation discusses the power of internal & external pressures that force teens to eventually make decisions. A risk-taking activity( the bag activity) is facilitated to clearly demonstrate a realistic view of both internal & external pressures, the effects on one’s decision-making & the eventual life-altering consequences that could occur from those decisions..

ABSTINENCE: THE BEAUTY OF A ROSE!

This presentation deals with how alcohol or drugs and sexual activity in relationships “infect” them and set them up for failure and heartache. A discussion of a relationship continuum will take place followed by a sharing of the many other mental, social, financial as well as the physical consequences of “sex” before marriage. Abstinence is given as the number 1 choice to consider to avoid the 27 unwanted consequences discussed. A rose is passed throughout the audience during the presentation & a petal is stripped as each consequence is discussed. Discussion follows as to the “beauty” of the rose & the beauty of an abstinent lifestyle!

SENIOR SUCCESS PLANNING

This “workshop” allows juniors/seniors an opportunity to take a close look at what they need to do or continue to do to be successful their final year. They are all asked to develop a plan for their life with the help of a community “mentor” they choose and then eventually meet with.


#103 TOPIC:
MENTOR TRAINING: Developing Connections with Underclassmen

TARGET AUDIENCE: Junior and Seniors in HS or 8th graders in a MS
LENGTH: 4-8 hrs.

This training involves the necessary components that juniors and seniors/or 8th graders in a MS situation need to create mentorships and connections with their intentionally designated underclassmen. The training includes: leadership skills, behaviors of an empowered leader, their role as a mentor, life skills that can be used when mentoring, developmental assets, ways to become more positive, confidence tips, skills for leading groups, ways to build more personal power, all interspersed with a variety of interactive energizers that all have life lessons within them so they can share those lessons as they mentor as well!

PEER MENTOR TRAINING

TARGET AUDIENCE: H.S. Peer Leaders-Mentors

This one day interactive training consists of an assessment of their leadership skills, several interactive activities/energizers that the mentors can use when they facilitate presentations, a review of the life skills that are critical to teen success and a discussion of several confidence tips that they should consider when they work with their peer groups. If time allows, small groups are given topics to teach to their own peer mentors for constructive evaluation and practice.

This presentation high-lights some of the research from Mr John Underwood from the American Athletic Institute. The relevant information is for athlete, teens, parents, coaches and/or community personnel. This presentation shares the new and very interesting research on alcohol/drugs and the brain. Related information on sleep, energy drinks, etc. can be included if time allows. To personalize, a 15-20 minute DVD entitled, GABE (interview with a potential HS athlete from prison) can be integrated as well!

EFFECTS OF TECHNOLOGY ON TODAY’S TEEN SOCIAL AND EMOTIONAL MATURITY

TARGET AUDIENCE: Adults/teachers/teens

This presentation addresses the “problems” / “concerns” that technology has put on teens today directly affecting their social and emotional maturity. The session will share some of the latest research regarding the “addiction” of technology. Practical suggestions for a healthy balance for parents and their teens while using technology will also be discussed.

CARING FOR YOUR PRICELESS BODY: What Are You Doing With Your Gift?

TARGET AUDIENCE: Middle/High students
LENGTH: 45 minutes-1.5 hrs.

This presentation doesn’t blatantly tell teens how to live their life but offers relevant information that will help them SHAPE THEIR OWN LIVES! The session specifically addresses how fortunate they are to have their health. It allows them to consider real hard decisions that have a direct impact on the quality of the rest of their lives. A more intense look at just alcohol and drug use/abuse and the many unknown potential affects are shared with them for consideration in their decision-making processes. This relevant information shared comes from John Underwood, a researcher with the American Athletic Institute. After over 14,000 studies over 20 years, he has shared new results from his research that is critical for all teens, parents, coaches, school administration, law enforcement and community members. The session focuses on looking at their bodies as priceless gifts. Intermittent stories and video clips are used to allow the teen to "feel" the necessary emotions in their hearts as they truly think about the decisions they are making or about to make soon.
